UK Citizenship

Apply to become a British citizen if you have lived in the UK for at least five years, provided that you meet the detailed criteria set out by the Home Office.

If you have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK and have lived in the country for at least five years, you may be eligible to apply for citizenship. If successful, you will be granted full rights to live, work and study in the UK freely. You will also be permitted to vote and can apply for a British passport.

Applications for UK citizenship can be an incredibly stressful process, so we highly recommend seeking legal advice prior to applying to ensure the best chances for success. Our dedicated immigration lawyers will guide you through every step of the process, easing the burden of applying for citizenship.

  • If you have ILR/Settlement, we will advise on your eligibility for citizenship and will help you to establish a timeline for becoming a British citizen.
  • We will ensure you comply with all of the visa requirements and will take the stress out of preparing and submitting a strong visa application.
  • We can also help you to determine whether any members of your family qualify for citizenship, and will support in submitting their applications either separately or together with your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to become a British citizen?

The application fee for British citizenship costs £1,330, which includes the £80 fee for the citizenship ceremony which you must attend if your application is successful.

Will I need to attend a ceremony?

Yes, if your citizenship application is successful and you are 18 years old or over, you will need to attend a citizenship ceremony within three months of receiving your Home Office invitation letter. You can book your ceremony online and, depending on your local authority, you may be able to have a ‘virtual ceremony’ online. The fee for the ceremony is included in your application fee.

How long does it take to get citizenship?

Home Office processing times for citizenship applications can vary greatly. In most cases, you should receive a decision within six months, but more complex applications can take longer. It can take up to three months from being told your application was successful to get your Home Office invitation letter, at which point you will have up to three months to book and attend your ceremony.

If you want to travel outside of the UK, you will also need to apply for a British passport in order to gain entry back into the country.
