How much notice does the Home Office have to give for an immigration inspection?
None, the Home Office can conduct unannounced site visits at any point. It is possible that they will provide you with prior notice, but this is increasingly uncommon. As such, sponsor licence holders must be prepared for an inspection at any point.
How do I know whether to expect an immigration site visit?
The Home Office can conduct site visits completely at random, so it is good practice to ensure your team is inspection-ready at all times. There are, however, some stages at which an inspection is more likely. These include:
- During the initial sponsor licence application process, before the licence is granted.
- After making a licence renewal application.
Checks may also be conducted at any point during the four-year licence validity period.
What will Home Office officials be looking for during an audit?

They’ll verify that you are completing Right to Work checks on all workers prior to employment, and that you have adequate systems to monitor employee immigration status and maintain employee data.
